Sequim Community Orchestra sets free concert for Feb. 15

Despite some chilly winter temperatures, the Sequim Community Orchestra is warming up a lineup of top classic pieces for their next concert.

The orchestra offers featured pieces from Rossini, Dvorak, Elgar, Tchaikovsky, Shostakovich and Beethoven starting at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 15, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 100 S. Blake Ave.

The concert is free, with a bake sale following the program to help fund the Sequim Kids String Program — an after-school program introducing, teaching and encouraging students in the Sequim School District the art of playing stringed instruments.

Donations from this and other concerts support both the adult orchestra and the youth program.

With musicians from Clallam and Jefferson counties, the Sequim Community Orchestra is a community-based group that encourages musicians of all levels to join. Rehearsals are 7 p.m. on Tuesday nights at the James Center for the Performing Arts, 350 N. Blake Ave., on the north end of Carrie Blake Community Park.

The orchestra’s mission is to inspire and encourage people to learn, re-learn or refresh skills, and to participate in three concerts through the fall, winter and spring seasons, representatives said.

Players may come from all of Clallam or Jefferson counties. There is a small participation fee to help defray costs of music. String, winds, percussion and brass musicians are invited to come to a rehearsal and consider joining for the love of music, enhancing skills, and sharing with many others who have returned to their instruments after a “hiatus” in playing classical music.

The orchestra’s second regular concert is set for 7 p.m. on Saturday, May 16, also at Trinity United Methodist Church.
