Oyster Odyssey

The North Olympic Library System (NOLS) and Humanities Washington will present “Heaven on the Half Shell: Washington State’s Oyster Odyssey,” a free virtual talk with author David George Gordon at 6 p.m. Wednesday, May 7.

Register in advance at NOLS.org/HW to receive the Zoom link.

Gordon will discuss Olympia, Eastern and Pacific oysters, and the people who have cultivated these delicacies for many generations. Participants will learn about the Native American sea gardens and clam beds that existed 11,500 years ago, as well as the contemporary efforts in Washington to cultivate oysters, both native and introduced.

Attendees will also discover the innovations that have made oysters a popular and environmentally sustainable food.

Gordon is the principal author of “Heaven on the Half Shell: The Story of the Oyster in the Pacific Northwest.” A former science writer for Washington Sea Grant, Gordon has written 22 books on topics ranging from slugs and snails to sharks, gray whales and Sasquatch.

Several of his books are available for checkout through NOLS.
