The Oregon Shadow Theatre visits local libraries this June, as part of the North Olympic Library System’s annual summer reading program for young people.

The first of three performances is at 6 p.m. Monday, June 27, at the Port Angeles Library, 2210 S. Peabody St., followed by a show at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 28, at the Sequim High School auditorium, 601 N. Sequim Ave., and another performance later that day at the Rainforest Arts Center in Forks.

In the Oregon Shadow Theatre’s production, the audience meets Anansi — a clever, witty, foolish and greedy little spider who loves to eat but hates to work. Watch what happens as Anansi meets a river goblin, fights a chimpanzee and plays a trick on his entire village.

The 2016 Summer Reading Program runs through Aug. 20, offering an array of events and incentive-based reading programs to encourage children to read during their summer vacations.

Library summer reading programs have been shown to help alleviate the “summer slide” — research shows children who do not read during the summer lose up to a month of instructional knowledge they learned the previous year — by providing access to materials and enrichment activities, plus encouraging children to continue reading.

For more information about how to participate in the 2016 Summer Reading Program, visit www.nols.org, call the Port Angeles Library at 417-8500 ext. 770 or send an email to youth@nols.org.

Summer reading programs and events are supported by Friends of the Library groups at all four peninsula libraries.
