Five people have been displaced from an early morning structure fire in Blyn on Thursday, Oct. 23.
Clallam County Fire District 3 reports that residents on the 27000 block of U.S. Highway 101 were awakened by smoke alarms and were able to safely evacuate the home at 12:56 a.m.
Battalion Chief Chris Turner said the first crew from station 37 arrived within 10 minutes to begin an exterior attack on the fire, but first had difficulty finding the home as the address marker had previously been knocked down.
Firefighters report that the fire was in the ceiling and “crawling down the wall” of the two-story residence.
Units from Sequim station 34 assisted with extinguishing the fire and searching the home.
Blyn station 33 also arrived and was sent to the roof to begin ventilation operations with chainsaws to gain access to the upstairs fire, Turner said.
A consistent water supply was provided by water tenders from the three career stations throughout the incident.
Turner said the American Red Cross arrived on scene to assist the family of five, including a baby.
No injuries were reported.
The fire remains under investigation, but Turner said it could be a potential electrical fire.
Turner said while the home’s downstairs is mostly unaffected from flames, the roof was opened up to contain the fire.
During the incident, Clallam 2 Fire-Rescue from Port Angeles provided mutual aid to respond to an unrelated EMS call within Fire District 3’s coverage area.
Clallam County Sheriff’s Office provided traffic control, and Olympic Ambulance stood by for any emergency medical needs on scene.
Turner said October has been a busy month with an increased emphasis on fire prevention. He encourages locals to ensure they have working smoke alarms in their homes and to “Hear the beep where you sleep.”
