The scoreboard shows Klahowya won the meet, but Sequim swimmers were able to take away plenty of positive numbers.
The Wolves posted a pair of first-place finishes and five runner-up spots in a 109-50 loss to Klahowya’s Eagles in Silverdale on Jan. 14.
“It was great to see everyone swimming so well,” Sequim coach Linda Moats said.
Wendall Lorenzen set a personal best by 11 seconds in the 200 individual medley with a 2:52.49 to take top honors, and teammate Liam Payne was second in 2:58.29, his first try in that event.
Payne took first in the 100 breaststroke with a 1:24.48 finish, a personal best by 3.5 seconds.
“We made a few changes to his stroke technique this last week and it really paid off,” Moats said.
David Calderon shed 2.4 seconds off of his 100 backstroke time to 1:23.26 — a 14-second improvement in the past two weeks. Sequim’s Brandon Grow was just 0.32 of a second behind his teammate in his first try at the event.
Moats said Calderon also posted a strong time in his first competitive attempt in the 100 butterfly with a 1:35.78. “I believe he will be a strong contender in this event in the future,” Moats said.
Alex Berikoff posted personal bests in both the 50 free by 1.5 seconds (27.91) and in the 100 free by 3.5 seconds (1:09.57). Teammate Christian Goodrich posted personal bests in both events as well, dropping 0.3 of a second in the 50 free and 2.7 seconds in the 100 free.
Sequim’s 200 free relay team cut down their best time by nearly six seconds and are just 4.63 seconds off a district meet-qualifying time.
The Wolves (0-4) take on Olympic on Jan. 21 at Port Angeles’ William Shore Memorial pool as a makeup for a canceled meet in early December.
Sequim finishes the regular season with a home date against Bremerton on Jan. 28, then competes at the Olympic League Invitational on Feb. 2, also at Port Angles’ William Shore Memorial pool.
