College soccer: Pirate women win game, lose player

This game should have brought a smile to Kanyon Anderson’s face.

Instead, the 13-0 rout of Skagit Valley Wednesday afternoon brought a half-grin, half grimace to the coach of the third-year Pirate squad after losing freshman midfielder Nicole Vanni to a knee injury in the second half.

"She may be done (for the season)," Anderson said following a subdued team meeting.

It’s the second potentially season-ending knee injury for the Pirates in as many games: sophomore Kelsie Ng suffered a knee injury in Saturday’s win at Columbia River. Both players have had MRI tests and are awaiting results, Anderson said.

On the pitch, the Pirates simply dominated the Cardinals. Kendra Miner opened the scoring at the 10-minute mark off a Hailey Berg assist. Not long after, Anderson pulled most of his starters with a 1-0 lead when it was clear the game would be as lopsided as in their previous matches (a 7-0 P.C. win in 2011, and 4-0 Peninsula victory in 2010).

The Pirates went up 6-0 by halftime, getting a pair of scores from Rachel Crossan and Rachel Sandoval, and another from Vanni.

Alexandra Rojas-Ayala scored a hat trick while Crossan added her third score. Brianna Estrallado, Irene Jones and Morgan Atchley added scores in the second frame.

Crossan and Sandoval also had three assists apiece.

"It’s easy in a game like that to give up a goal," Anderson said. "They stayed focused for 90 minutes. That shows maturity."

A total of 23 Pirates saw action on the field, with second string players seeing about 70 minutes of play.

Anderson said he was particularly pleased with the play of Rojas-Ayala, Crossen and his two reserve center backs: Melissa Delgado and Misty Kaiwi.

But worry for the injured freshman dominated post-game talk.

"The biggest concern for us is how she (Vanni) will recover," Anderson said.

The Pirates are back in action Saturday, hosting Treasure Valley.
