On paper, Saturday’s district meet looked like a two-way race between a senior-led Lindbergh team and a youthful Sequim Wolfpack.

And that’s exactly how it played out.

Lindbergh seniors Endalkachew Abebaw and Colton Maddy went 1-2 but Sequim’s boys team was simply deeper, edging Lindbergh by three points (77-80) to win the West Central District 2A boys race at American Lake Golf Course in Tacoma.

Peter Ohnstad was 10th (17:23), Brendon Despain was 12th (17:25) and Mikey Cobb placed 17th (17:31) as Sequim punched their ticket to the class 2A state meet in style.

“Just 25 seconds between our first and seventh runners — that’s how we were able to beat them,” Sequim coach Harold Huff said. “It was so close. It’s tough to beat a team when they score the first two guys.”

While Sequim’s top three runners were keeping pace with the lead pack, the four other Wolves were right behind. Chris Jeffko was 21st, just two seconds back of Cobb, and C.J. Daniels was 22nd with a 17:38 finish.

Christian Ash and Jackson Oliver finished back-to-back as well at 28th and 29th, at 17:44 and 17:47 respectively.

“Chris (Jeffko) has just been incredible,” Huff said, noting Jeffko’s 44-second improvement from his 2012 effort at districts.

Sequim’s girls placed 10th out of 11 teams, with freshman Erin Vig missing a state berth by just two places. She was 27th, finishing with a 21:53 mark. Fellow freshman Elizabeth Rosales was 46th with a 23:05 finish and teammate Siana Turner, a junior, was 64th (23:58).

“(Erin) had a great race, courageous race,” Huff said. Only eight girls beat her in this race, 16th at league.

On the boys’s side, Renton was a distant third with 113 team points, Port Angeles was fourth at 135 points and Sumner, last years’ district champs, were fifth. Lindbergh’s Abebaw won the event in 16:35, about 25 second faster than teammate Maddy.

Peter Butler of Port Angeles was fourth.

Lindbergh’s girls (61 points) won the team title, 40 points better than North Kitsap. Port Angeles was third, Steilacoom fourth and Sumner fifth.

The top five teams on both sides advance to state, along with the top 25 individuals.

The state 2A meet is set for Nov. 9 at Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco.

“We ran well but we’re capable of more,” Huff said of Sequim’s boys’ team.

“If they’re going to do well at state, the top end is going to have to do better. I would be real happy with sixth, seventh place. (But) I’m just happy we’re there.”
