Gymnastics: Sequim-PA squad posts strong scores in league meets

The combined Sequim-Port Angeles gymnastics team posted a 1-3 mark after its three league meets, with a number of strong individual efforts tallied so far this season.

The team opened its Olympic League schedule on Jan. 9 at Kingston, with North Kitsap taking first with 142.9 points, Sequim-Port Angeles second at 131.05 points and host Kingston with 64.55 points.

In all-around scoring, Sequim’s Lucy Spelker was third with 30.0 points, placing second on beam (7.8), third on floor (8.2), fourth on bars (6.0) and fifth on vault (8.0).

Sequim’s Susannah Sharp was fourth in all-around scoring with 29.75 points, taking second on vault (8.35) and floor (8.35), third on bars (6.6) and fourth on beam (6.5).

Port Angeles’ Waverly Mead was eighth in overall scoring with a total score of 21.70 points, placing eight on vault (7.6).

Sequim’s Madison Ripley took sixth in the vault with a 7.9 mark, and Port Angeles’ Maddie Adams was fifth on the beam (6.3) and eighth on the floor (7.10).

First home meet

Taking on 3A powerhouse Bainbridge in their first home meet of the short season on Jan. 15, the Sequim-Port Angeles team placed second in overall scoring to the Spartans, 163.75-139.05.

Spelker took second in all-around scoring with 33.10 points, placing second on bars (6.9), second on floor exercise (9.15), fourth on beam (8.8) and fifth on vault (8.25).

Sharp was fourth in all-around points (30.60), earning the top score on vault (8.55), fourth on floor exercise (8.65) and ninth on bars (6.1).

Ripley was eight on vault (7.7) and ninth on floor exercise (7.3).

League rematch

In a rematch Bainbridge on Jan. 19, the Sequim-Port Angeles squad closed the gap between the schools in a 158.25-141.4 defeat.

Bainbridge swept the top three all-around placings, followed by Port Angeles’s Scarlett Sullivan in fourth (31.05 points), Spelker (fifth, 31.00) and Sharp (29.45).

Spelker earned here high placing with strong marks on the floor exercise (fifth, 8.95 points) and vault (seventh, 8.15). Sharp earned a pair of third place event finishes, scoring high on the vault (8.4) and floor exercise (9.05).

The combined Sequim-Port Angeles squad hosted a meet on Jan. 27; results were not available at press time. The postseason kicks off with sub-districts at Kingston on Feb. 8.
