Loerlein joins Wolves at state

Sequim High senior Steve Loerlein is joining his teammates at the state 2A championships this week after earning one of five state berths at the West Central District tournament May 17 at Fort Lewis.

Loerlein shot an 82 for 18 holes at Eagle Pride Golf Course to finish fifth, earning the final state berth.

Teammate Casey Torres, a sophomore, shot a 90 and finished 13th overall.

Junior Taylor Hallock of Interlake won the district tourney boy’s title with a 76.

Loerlein joins Sequim’s Mallory Maloney and Ryan O’Mera, who qualified by finishing in the top four at the Olympic League tournament on May 11.

On the girls’ side, Sequim’s Lisa Doan and Ashley Morton both shot rounds of 127, missing out on the extra state berths.

"They were a big part of the success we had this year," Sequim coach Garrett Smithson said, particularly in the Wolves’ championship at the Duke Streeter Invite in April.

Senior Jessica Parker of Interlake won the district tourney girl’s title by 18 shots with a round of 76.

Sequim’s Zoei Zbaraschuk, Kim Duce and Haley Estes are playing at the state tourney this week, giving the Wolves six state participants.

The state tournament is May 25-26 at Apple Tree Golf Course in Yakima.
