SHS basketball falls to Kingston, Olympic while wrestlers split dual meet

SHS girls basketball lose on road at Kingston, at home to Trojans

Sequim’s varsity girls basketball team (0-3, 2-4) lost to Olympic (2-1, 4-1) on Dec. 18, falling 42-34.

The Wolves fell behind by three at the end of the first quarter, 12-9, but outpaced the Trojans in the second quarter to lead at halftime 21-16.

But scoring became a problem for Sequim as they only sunk six points in each quarter in the second half.

Adrienne Haggerty led the Wolves with 12 points followed by Jordan Miller with 11, Ella Christiansen 10 and Jordan Bentz 1 point.

Two days prior, Haggerty scored 17 points but Sequim’s girls basketball squad couldn’t keep pace at Kingston on Dec. 16, falling to the host Buccaneers 53-40.

Miller added 15 points and Christiansen added five in defeat.

Kingston, who led 16-11 after one quarter, 31-22 at halftime and 44-28 after three quarters, was led by the 25 points of center Lily Eckert.

The Wolves played Anacortes on Dec. 19 before heading into winter break.

Turnovers, poor shooting spell doom for SHS boys

Sequim’s inexperience reared its proverbial ugly head last week in a 45-41 home loss to Kingston on Dec. 16.

The Wolves, who led 21-20 at halftime, couldn’t hold the lead after committing 22 turnovers to Kingston’s eight.

Nick Faunce led Sequim with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Teammate Payton Glasser added 10 points and nine rebounds, and Jackson Oliver chipped in 11 points.

Gabe Gregory (13 points) and Liam Young (12 points) paced Kingston.

Two days later, Olympic’s Trojans survived a dreadful night shooting for both teams as they knocked off Sequim 36-29 on Dec. 18, overcoming a three-point Wolves’ lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Sequim (0-3 in league ,3-4 overall), who shot just 10-of-43 (23.3 percent) from the field, was led by Oliver’s 11 points and eight rebounds, and Glasser’s nine points and 11 rebounds. Glasser and Riley Cowan had three steals apiece.

Jumier Johnson led Olympic (1-2, 4-4) with 17 points, but the Trojans also struggled to find the basket, hitting just 14-of-47 (29.8 percent) from the field and missing all 10 3-point tries.

Sequim was slated to take on Anacortes on Dec. 19 and Lynden on Dec. 21.

Bulldogs’ bowlers drop Wolves on lanes

Sequim’s Wolves dropped their final match heading into the winter break, a 6-1 decision at North Mason on Dec. 15.

An illness kept Sequim’s top bowler, Dakota Henderson, off the lanes for one game.

Kaleigh Cassal led Sequim with a two-game, 228-pin series, while Sarah Newell bowled a 204 series.

Sequim dropped the regular games 566-459 and 525-430 but managed to take one Baker-format game, 133-119.

The Wolves (1-8) are back in action Jan. 5 at Klahowya before closing the regular season with home matches against Olympic (Jan. 7) and Bremerton (Jan. 14).
