Prep sports: Sequim cross country starts strong, Wolves’ girls soccer improves to 2-0

Sequim’s Cross country squad showed it can run with some of the best teams in the region at the Capital Invite, held in Olympia on Sept. 13.

It’s already a busy fall prep sports season.

Sequim’s Cross country squad showed it can run with some of the best teams in the region at the Capital Invite, held in Olympia on Sept. 13.

While the races are broken out by age group and not officially scored, the Wolves’ junior boys placed second in their division behind powerhouse Jesuit High School of Portland, Ore. — a 16-time Oregon state champion since 1996.

Sequim’s juniors outpaced bigger schools like Issaquah, Peninsula and the host Olympia squad.

Brendon Despain (fifth), C.J. Daniels (eighth) and Jackson Oliver (15th) led the charge.

Peter Ohnstad (ninth) and Mikey Cobb (14th) led SHS in the 118-participant senior race.

Freshman Andrew Hansted was 28th in his 172-man race.

Were the meet scored without respect to age divisions, assistant coach Michael Cobb notes, Sequim’s boys would have finished just behind Jesuit and ahead of 20 other bigger (3A or 4A) teams from Washington state schools.

On the girls’ side, Waverly Shreffler made a strong start in her cross country debut, placing ninth in the 121-girl junior race while teammate Emily Webb was 22nd. As a team, Sequim’s junior girls were sixth.

SHS sophomores Erin Vig (29th) and Elizabeth Rosales (34th) paced Sequim’s sophomore crew. Noelle Bittner placed 42nd in the freshman race for the Wolves.

Michael Cobb noted Sequim’s girls would have finished second only to Tumwater among the eight 2A teams at the meet, were the event scored by team totals.

Cobb noted that Audrey Shingleton was held out of the meet because of an injury.

“We hope to have her on the course in Seaside next weekend,” he said. “Our team looked great and we have high hopes for an amazing season.”

The Wolves are at the Three-Course CHallenge in Seaside, Ore., on Sept. 20.

Soccer scores wins

Sequim was slated to host Klahowya on Sept. 16 and Kingston on Sept. 23 before a key matchup with rival Port Angeles on the road on Sept. 25.

Volleyball’s big week of opening action

The Wolves host Kingston on Sept. 23.
