Not pretty, but another win.

Sequim shrugged off a loss to North Mason earlier in the week with a nail-

biting, 39-36 win against Port Townsend on Dec. 11.

Michael Dunning scored 12 points, John Textor hit for 10 points and the Wolves survived some poor shooting to topple the Redskins.

"Neither team did a good job shooting,"

Sequim coach Greg Glasser said. "We’re still making some correctable mistakes."

Port Townsend, missing eight players from its powerhouse squad from 2008-2009, managed to build a 22-17 lead by halftime, but Sequim trimmed the lead to just two by the end of the third quarter.

Sequim outscored P.T. 9-4 in the final eight minutes.

Evan O’Brien led the Redskins with 14 points, while Eric Thomas added nine.

"Coach (John) Stroeder does a nice job with the kids," Glasser said. "O’Brien can score; he’s a good athlete. They did a nice job being patient."

Glasser said his Wolves have plenty of things to work on before he considers them a cohesive team.

"I’m hoping we’re getting there," he said.

Sequim was slated to play at Washougal on

Dec. 12 but didn’t make the trip because weather reports in the area indicated poor road conditions.

"We didn’t want to risk it," Glasser said.

Sequim’s win against Port Townsend puts them at 2-1 in Olympic League play – the same as cross-peninsula rival Port Angeles, who added a second win by beating previously undefeated Kingston 49-42 on Friday night.

The two teams clash Friday, Dec. 18, in Sequim.

Glasser said Port Angeles will be a tough match-up for the Wolves.

"They (the Roughriders) are big and physical and like to rebound the ball," he said. "We’re definitely going to have to defend not only on the inside (but also) the outside; they’re a very good team."

The Roughriders come in with just one loss on the season – a five-point defeat to Bremerton in the season-opener. Since then they’ve knocked off Yelm, Olympic and Kingston’s Buccaneers.

P.A. gets balanced scoring, led by the 16 points per game from guard Antonio Stevenson and 11 points per game from post Steve Rogers. Justin Williams (8.3 ppg), Colin Wheeler (7 ppg), Nathan Hofer (5.5 ppg) and Ian Ward (5.3 ppg) give the ‘Riders depth.

"Steve Rogers is one of the best post players in the league (and) Stevenson is one of the best guards in the league," Glasser said.

The game is a double-header; the girls start at 5:15 p.m., followed by the boys’ game at 7 p.m.

Prior to the Tuesday night Olympic League game, Glasser said North Mason’s Bulldogs are much more than their two big stars in guard Brett Skogstad and post John Fullington.

The North Mason shooter sank two key three-pointers and, with Skogstad, hit for 14 points as North Mason outlasted Sequim 55-41 on Dec. 8.

Sequim’s Wolves kept the Bulldogs close for three quarters, trimming an 11-point third-quarter lead to five points heading into the fourth quarter.

But North Mason outscored Sequim 16-7 in the final eight minutes.

Textor led Sequim with 11 points while Nick Camporini added eight points.
