Sonny Sixkiller, the quarterback who turned around the University of Washington football program in the early 1970s, hosts his first Husky Celebrity Golf Tournament at the Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe’s The Cedars at Dungeness golf course on Friday, July 29.
A limited number of playing spots still are available to peninsula residents.
Those interested in playing — and being paired with one of the Husky Legends in the tournament — should call George Hill at the OMC Foundation office at 417-7144.
Besides golf, participants will be treated to a private party with all of the Husky players on Thursday, July 28, which will feature several Husky-related auction items.
“We are delighted to be a part of this tournament. We think it will be the premier sporting event on the peninsula,” said Jerry Allen, the CEO of 7 Cedars Casino. “We have been very fortunate to partner with Sonny for the past 10 years.”
He has lined up a who’s who list of Husky legends to play in the tournament, including former coaches Don James and Jim Lambright, Steve Emtman, Jason Chorak, Bob Schloredt, Jim Mora, Chuck Nelson and several others.
Other former Huskies who will be present are Scott Jones and Sam Hurworth, two of the three Port Angeles High School graduates who played for the Huskies, Sequim resident Don McKeta and Port Townsend resident Chuck Allen, stars of the 1960-1961 Husky Rose Bowl teams.
Sixkiller led the nation in passing in 1970 and was featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated for Oct. 4, 1971. In a recent poll he was named one of the top 10 Pac-10 quarterbacks of all time.
“I have always wanted to set up a tournament to showcase the legacy of University of Washington sports, especially football,” Sixkiller said. “I am extremely pleased to be able to work with the Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe once again and am happy that it will benefit the Olympic Medical Center Foundation.”
Celebrity Husky golf tourney dinner on tap
Though the golf tourney may be close to selling out, Husky fans and others still will have the opportunity to meet the 32 Husky legends who will participate in the tournament at a dinner and auction prior to the event at 7 p.m. on Thursday, July 28, at 7 Cedars Casino, 270756 U.S. Highway 101.
Besides Sixkiller, the quarterback who turned around the University of Washington football program in the early 1970s, other Husky legends at the dinner include Emtman, James, Mora, Schloredt, Jim Lambright, Marques Tuiasasopo, Nesby Glasgow, Dane Looker and others.
Several items, including autographed Husky memorabilia, Mariner spring training and Indianapolis 500 trips, and dinner with Sixkiller prior to a Husky game will be auctioned off.
