Women’s soccer: Pirates edge Orcas, 1-0

Peninsula blanks Edmonds with ninth shutout of season

Everett may be the class leader of the division, but top-ranked Peninsula is lurking.

The Pirates got a pair of shutout wins last week to remain in second place behind the Trojans, out-scoring opponents this fall 38-1.

On Sept. 26 at Edmonds, Audrey Barham scored a first half goal while Coby Yoshimura and Lexi Krieger added second half scores for a 3-0 whitewashing of the host Tritons.

“I was pleased with the effort and except for a slow start to the second half we showed improvement as the game went along,” Peninsula head coach Kanyon Anderson said.

“It was nice to get a few goals at the end,” he said. “We worked hard and were unlucky to not have had a few more.”

Manaia Siania-Unutoa needed to make just one save as Peninsula — ranked No. 1 in the NWAC — recorded the team’s conference-leading ninth shutout of the season.

Kameryn Jury-Hale and Olivia Moore had assists.

Getting by Whatcom

It was a blowout in every sense, minus the score.

Peninsula dominated most of the action against visiting Whatcom but needed a score in the 68th minute to nab a 1-0 home victory against the Orcas on Sept. 23.

Pirates sophomore Michele Whan scored an unassisted goal directly off a corner kick in the second half, curling a shot past Whatcom keeper Hannah Fisher to the far side of the goal, and the Peninsula defense held up in the shutout — PC’s conference-leading eighth of the campaign.

Siania-Unutoa recorded her NWAC-leading sixth shutout of the season with four saves.

“The game was frustrating; we had chances from start to finish but we’re not able to put them away,” Anderson said.

Orcas keepers handled 16 saves to keep the game close.

“Whatcom was committed to defending and was tough from beginning to end,” Anderson said. “We have to be sharper in the final third of the field so that we don’t let games slip away from us. I was impressed with our team defending and our willingness to challenge for the loose balls.”

Coming up

The Pirates (4-1-0 in conference, 8-1-0 overall) are at Shoreline on Sept. 30 before returning home for PC’s “White Out Game” against Everett on Oct. 3.

The Pirate Athletic Department, sponsored by the Associated Student Government, is dispersing white “Pirate Proud” T-shirts at the contest.
