Summer vacation can wait for this young Sequim athlete.

Twelve-year-old Alexander Barry enters seventh grade at Sequim Middle School in the fall but he’s getting an education at the Northwest USA Track & Field championships and state Hershey Track championships this June.

On June 21, Barry competed at the USA Track & Field Northwest Association Pent meet in Yelm on June 21 and in Seattle June 27-28, placing second in overall points with 1,708, about 2,000 points behind Ryan Chase of Olympia.

In Yelm, Barry won the 1,500-meter race (5 minutes, 19 seconds), tied for first in the high jump (4 feet, 3.25 inches), was second in the shot put (24 feet, 11.75 inches), second in the long jump (14 feet, 2.25 inches) and took fifth in the 80-meter hurdles (17.29 seconds).

In Seattle, Barry placed second in the 3,000 meter run at 10:50.9, just seven seconds behind Dakota Powers of Whidbey Island, and placed third in the long jump at 14 feet, 1.25 inches. He also placed third in the 80-meter hurdles with a 16.51 mark.

On June 27, Barry participated in the Washington State Hershey Track Meet in Lacey, earning a spot there after qualifying in a Hershey meet in Hoquiam in mid-May.

Barry took second in both the 400-meter (1:08.9) and 800-meter runs (2:31.7), and was sixth in the softball throw (137 feet, 4 inches).

About 600 youths of ages 8-14 from across the state participated at the Hershey meet, with 20-30 athletes in each age group.
