Bowling: Wolves sending 3 to district tournament

A breakout first game nearly put the Wolves’ entire team into the district tournament.

A breakout first game nearly put the Wolves’ entire team into the district tournament.

In the end, three Sequim bowlers — including the league’s No. 2 bowler Dakota Henderson — earned tickets to districts after a strong showing at the Olympic League tournament in Silverdale on Jan. 22.

The West Central District tourney is set for Saturday, Jan. 30, at Pacific Lanes in Tacoma.

Joining Henderson are Kaleigh Cassal, who placed sixth, and Destiny Stauss, who will take the 10th and final individual district berth.

Henderson bowled a 212-pin first game as the Wolves posted a 794 score in game one, briefly leading the league tourney.

It was Sequim’s best single game all season and best in four or five seasons, Sequim coach Randy Perry said.

“Everybody was just on,” Perry said. “Dakota I was not surprised by at all; she can throw games like that. Same with Destiny — she’s really picked it up.”

Sequim bowled a 654 in game two and 572 in the third.

“That next game wasn’t bad; it was the second-highest all year,” Perry said.

Henderson finished with a three-game series of 522 pins (212-161-149), the second-best in the tournament, earning a first team all-Olympic League honor.

Cassal bowled a 414 (157-135-122) and Stauss a 379 (146-131-102).

Klahowya took top honors at the league tournament with 3,019 pins, with North Mason second (2,796), Olympic third (2,754), Steilacoom (2,620) fourth and Bremerton (2,600) picking up the fifth and final team district berth.

Sequim finished with 2,416 pins, eighth out of nine teams.

Ashlyn Jamrog of Olympic was named league MVP after bowling a three-game series of 570, 48 ahead of Henderson.

Others named to the all-league first team were quartet of Klahowya Eagles: Briana Kennard, Sarrah Ackerman, Ruth Click and Daniela McKeel.

Earning second-team honors were Bremerton’s Myranda Dye and North Mason’s Shaniya Brannon, Melanie Hall, Rylie Mullins and Haven Hermsen.

Four 2A/3A teams and another eight individuals at districts qualify for the state tournament, set for Feb. 5-6 at Narrows Plaza Bowl at University Place.

“(Districts) is going to be a great experience,” Perry said. “If Dakota she bowls like she did (at the league tourney), she’s going to state. And Destiny, you never know. She could catch fire.”
