Prep Sports: No post-spring break rust for SHS golf, tennis squads

Golf teams remain undefeated while tennis team goes 2-1

Sequim’s golf squads remain undefeated after a strong return from spring break.

The boys (5­0) traveled to Port Ludlow on April 12 to defeat Chimacum 346-­371 over 18 holes.

Coach Bill Shea said the boys battled strong winds and some rain but Sequim’s No. 1 Jack Shea won the match­up shooting a 77 with a 40 on the front nine holes and a 37. Chimacum’s Chris Bainbridge kept it close shooting an 82 and Marcus Bufford an 84. Sequim’s Blake Wiker shot an 87 followed by 91’s both from Jade Arnold and Josiah Carter.

Two days later, the Wolves hosted North Mason for a 339-­361 win with Jack Shea leading golfers again going two ­under ­par with a 70 on 18 holes. He shot a 35 on the front and back nines. Wiker shot an 82 for the Wolves followed by Carter with a 92 and Arnold a 95. The Bulldogs were led by Eric Jones with an 82 and Mac Jones an 85.

Sequim’s girls (5­0) were led by Alex McMenamin over two matches last week.

The Wolves hosted Kingston and North Kitsap (non-­league) on April 12 with a 177­-202 win over the Buccaneers and North Mason on April 14 for a 188­-243 win.

McMenamin shot a 35 on the front nine on April 12 and a 37 on April 14.

Against Kingston, Sequim’s Sarah Shea shot a 44 and Sydney Balkan and Megan O’Mera both 49 while Kendra Smith led the Bucs with a 44.

Versus the Bulldogs, Samantha Smith took the No. 2 score of the day with a 47 followed by Balkan with a 51 and Shea and O’Mera tying at 53. Rachel Johnson led the Bulldogs with a 59.

Both Sequim squads traveled to Whitehorse Golf Course in Kingston to play North Kitsap on April 19 and they host Olympic on Thursday, April 21.

Tennis goes 2-1 in week

Sequim’s girls tennis team (6-­2) finished a three-­match home stand 2-­1 last week.

The Wolves defeated Chimacum (3-­5) with six matches to one on April 11 and Kingston on April 15 four to three. They lost 6-­1 to Olympic League leading North Kitsap (9­-0) on April 13.

Against the Chimacum Cowboys, Katey Wake won the No. 2 singles matchup 6-­0, 6-­3 over Amelia Breithaup and Sequim’s Isabelle Hugonoit won 2-­6, 10­-7, 6­-4 over Gladys Hitt.

In doubles, Karen Chan and Hannah D’Amico won 6­-1, 6­-0 over Amy Plastow and Emma Craighead, and Kaleigh Cassal and Tea Gauthun won 6-­3, 6­-4 over Rene Woods and Christina Bell.

Chan and Wake were Sequim’s only varsity win against North Kitsap with a 6­-3, 2­-6, 7­-5 victory over Megan Cragg and Gillian Grennan.

For Sequim’s team win over Kingston, Sequim’s singles players Stephanie Lacour won 6-3 in two sets over Emily Shaleen, Isabelle Lugonoi won in three sets, 6-2, 4-6, 6-2, over McKenzie Atkins, and Gauthun won 6-1, 6-7 (5-7), 6-2. The Wolves’ No. 4 doubles team of Lindsey Carlson and Melissa Copeland won 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 over Tessa Johnson and Ellie Gardner.

Sequim travels to North Mason on April 19, Kingston on April 20 and host Bremerton on Thursday, April 21.
