Maybe a week off is what the Wolves soccer team needed.

Following spring break, Sequim swept its opponents last week to move up to 3-3 in the Olympic League and 6-4 overall.

The Wolves defeated Port Townsend at home 4-1 on April 12 and walloped Bremerton 5-1 away on April 14 and Olympic 5-1 in a Saturday match at home on April 16.

Sequim head coach Dave Brasher said a combination of player improvement, a weaker schedule and players returning from injury contributed to the wins.

“We’ve had a lot better starts and the kids are starting to roll together,” he said.

The first half against Port Townsend was active with plenty of shots but Sequim’s Liam Harris brought the scoring alive shortly into the second half followed one minute later by Thomas Winfield scoring on a turnover. He scored again with an assist from Harris at 45 minutes in.

Sequim’s Joe Urquia scored on an assist from Lane Danielson at 75 minutes and Port Townsend scored in the 78th minute.

Harris and Urquia led the Wolves with an onslaught of goals against the Knights.

Bremerton struck first four minutes in but the Wolves were undeterred as Harris scored 29 minutes and 54 minutes in. His late assists also setup Urquia for three goals late in the game at 68 minutes, 75 minutes and 76 minutes.

The Wolves struck first against the Trojans with Harris scoring a few minutes in on an assist from Lane Danielson and Cameron Chase scored at five minutes in with a shot over the goalie.

Sequim’s Hayden James rifled in a left-footed shot past the goalie’s outstretched hands at 23 minutes to go up 3-0.

Olympic scored at 45 minutes but Chase scored again at 50 minutes in on an assist from James. Winfield finished the game with the Wolves’ fifth goal on a pass from Harris.

Brasher said Harris has been “rock solid” all season while Chase continues to lead in the middle.

Winfield is rounding back into shape, too, he said, following an injury and Sequim’s goalkeeper Austin Wagner is “having his best year by far.”

Sequim also saw defenders Christian Benson and Mathew Craig return but midfielder Patrick McCrorie was lost for the season after breaking his ankle in the Ketchikan game on April 1.

Sequim hosted Kingston (5-1) Tuesday and travels to Port Angeles (5-1) on Thursday, April 21.

Brasher said Sequim started with a tough schedule but they stayed with their opponents in the close losses.

“I told them none of these teams seem head and shoulders above us,” he said. “We can hang with them. We’re excited to play with them again.”
