Prep Sports: SHS Fastpitch opens season with 3-1 mark

Tennis gets sweep, boys soccer falls to league powerhouses

Sequim fastpitch opened its first week of play with three wins and a loss all on the road.

On March 16, the Lady Wolves traveled to Peninsula and won 10-2 behind seven innings pitched by senior Mc-Kenzie Bentz who gave up five hits and one walk but struck out five batters.

Hitters Nicole Anders, Chloie Sparks and Jordan Bentz all had two hits apiece with Allysen Montelius scoring three times, and Kaylee Gumm, Anders and McKenzie Bentz all twice.

On March 17, they traveled to Chimacum and won 8-7, and to Anacortes on March 19 for a double-header, which they split with a 6-1 win over Anacortes and 12-5 loss to Sehome.

Stats were not available for the March 17 or March 19.

This week they travel to Klahowya today, March 23, and Bremerton on March 25, before hosting White River at 3 p.m. Saturday, March 26, and North Kitsap at 4 p.m. Tuesday, March 29.

Sequim tennis sweeps Bulldogs, Cowboys

The Lady Wolves’ tennis team opened its first week of play with two convincing wins.

Sequim hosted the North Mason Bulldogs for a 7-0 victory on March 16 and traveled the next day to Chimacum High for similar results.

Against North Mason, Sequim’s No. 1 singles player Karen Chan defeated Mikaela Michaels while No. 2 player Stephanie LaCour defeated Makinna Skjonsby, and Isabelle Hugonoit, at No. 3, defeated Kaylie Green.

In doubles play, the Wolves’ No. 1 team Hannah D’Amico and Katey Wake defeated Astrid Lundberg and Terri Johnson, and No. 2 team Jessica Craig and Caihley Cassal defeated Brooke Waite and Elmira Morozova.

At No. 3 doubles play, Sequim’s Tea Gauthun and Andrea Albaugh defeated Calista Navarro and Tessia Wing, and No. 4 team Lindsey Carlson and Melissa Copeland defeated Allison Harlow-Tarwater and Melina Kirsh. Specific scores were not available.

In Chimacum, Chan won 6-1 in both sets over An Nguyen, LaCour won 7-5, 6-3 over Sophia Thurston, and Isabelle Hugonoit defeated Amelia Breithaupt 4-6, 7-6 (7-5), (10-7).

Sequim’s Wake and D’Amico defeated Jordyn Johnson and Tessa Rasmussen 6-1, 6-2, Craig and Kassal defeated Gladys Hitt and Renee Woods 4-6, 6-2, (10-6), and Albaugh and Gauthun won by forfeit.

No. 4 team Carlson and Copeland defeated Emma Craighead and Anna Pace 6-2 in both sets.

Sequim faced Bremerton on March 22 away and travels to Kingston on March 24 and PA on March 28. Their next home match is April 11 against Chimacum.

SHS soccer slips at Klahowya, Kingston

Talk about a true early season test.

Sequim’s boys soccer squad took on Klahowya — last year’s fourth place team at the state 1A tourney — and fell 1-0 on the Eagles’ home turf in Silverdale on March 17.

On March 19, the Wolves faced another state competitor on the road, falling 2-0 to 2A powerhouse Kingston.

Sequim (0-2) was slated to play at Coupeville (Whidbey Island) on March 22 — results were not available at press time.

The Wolves are back in action on Saturday, March 26, taking on rival Port Angeles. Junior varsity kicks off at 11 a.m. with varsity following at 12:45 p.m.
