Riders prevail vs. improving Wolves

Pool bragging rights go to Port Angeles for one more year.

But Sequim’s Wolves can boast a 38-point improvement against Port Angeles this season after falling 110-74 to the visiting Roughriders on Jan. 22.

On Dec. 11, Port Angeles dunked Sequim 131-57.

"Although they are a stronger team than we are and won the meet, we scored pretty well,"

Sequim coach Linda Bingler said.

The Wolves picked up two first-place swims. The 200 free relay team of Alex Skinner, Parker Steichen, Noe Calderon and Triston Cortani splashed to a 2:09.54 finish for first, and Calderon’s 1:16.21 finish in the 100 breaststroke – tops on the team this season – was a district-qualifying swim and Calderon’s best by four seconds.

Calderon also improved his 100 free time by a second in a 1.2 seconds off the district-qualifying mark.

Sequim’s 200 free relay team (Calderon, Steichen, Skinner and Thomas Moores) also is nearing a district-qualifying time after posting a 1:50.63 finish, less than three seconds off the standard.

Sequim’s Steven Moore bettered his 200 individual medley time by nine seconds, a "phenomenal effort," Bingler said.

Other swimmers who picked up personal best wins against Port Angeles include: Tanner Estep (200 free, 500 free), Joe Dapcevich (200 free, 500 free), Jake Dethlefsen (50 free), Michael Okamoto (50 free) and Ettore Scudo, a personal best in the 100 butterfly by 10 seconds.

Tim Christman (200 free, 500 free) and Nick Peterson (50 free, diving) had a pair of wins for Port Angeles while Charlie Parks (200 IM), Ben Flowers (100 fly) and Brook Nackman (100 free) each won one event.

Sequim was scheduled to swim at Bremerton Jan. 27 – results were unavailable at press time. The Wolves swim at Olympic Jan. 29 before traveling to Port Angeles for the Olympic League invite Feb. 5.
